Oak Lawn’s History
The history of Oak Lawn dates back to 1835 when James B. Campbell bought a plot of land that stretched between Cicero Avenue and Central Avenue. The land changed hands in 1842 and in the 1840s and 50s, settlers made their way to the area known as Black Oaks. It wasn’t until 1882 that the area was named Oak Lawn with the village becoming incorporated in 1909.
Following World War II, Oak Lawn saw a major population boom and Oak Lawn Round-Up Days became an annual event that worked to promote the village. By 1960, Oak Lawn was home to over 20,000 residents.
But in 1967, an F4 tornado touched down in Oak Lawn, destroying or damaging over 900 buildings and killing more than 30 residents. The village has since rebuilt from this disaster, but it remains one of the worst tornados to strike an urban area.
Now, Oak Lawn has over 56,000 residents and is a flourishing suburb of Chicago. They are also known for their community hospital, Christ Community Hospital. They are a Level 1 trauma center and their emergency department treats more patients than any other hospital in Illinois.
Interesting History: Oak Lawn made national news in 2007-08 for their stop sign program. The village was searching for a creative way to get motorists to obey the traffic signs and added humorous phrases, like “stop in the name of love” and “stop right there pilgrim,” to their traditional stop signs. These signs were placed at major intersections in an effort to decrease accidents, but the Illinois state government ordered that the signs be removed in 2008.
