Hyaluronic Acid is a natural sugar molecule -known as a polysaccharide or a glycosaminoglycan, found in almost all species in various parts of the body. Its highest concentration is found in the synovial fluid of our joints also in our skin and eyes. High concentrations exist especially in the knee joint as the knee joint is the major weight-bearing joint in our body.

In the joint spaces, it acts as a lubricant and cushions the joint. It also acts as a “scaffold protein”, which allows our own or injected stem cells (into our joints for osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis), to have a structured mesh to cling to. Hyaluronic Acid greatly enhances the efficacy of some other therapies, especially in the knees.

Our treatment is delivered by joint injection. Typically, there are a series of five weekly injections. Some experience relief after one injection and usually by the 3rd injection but five weekly injections are strongly recommended.

There are basically three sources for joint injections and one is far superior to the others. Not all Hyaluronic Acid sources are created equal.

The Hyaluronic Acid product we use at Beyer Regenerative Medicine is from extraction and purification from the fermentation of bacteria. The extreme benefit to this is that this form is identical in chemical composition to human Hyaluronic Acid so there is no immune reaction. The product is known as Genvisc 850 from OrthogenRX Research shows that Genvisc 850 is as safe as injecting saline solution into the joint.

Is It FDA approved?

Yes, Genvisc 850 is FDA approved for knees. Using Hyaluronic Acid injections for other joints can be discussed.

Are Hyaluronic Acid Injections safe?

Is Hyaluronic Acid covered by insurance?

For most patients with arthritic knee pain, it could be cover by insurance. Our offices accept Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Blue Cross Blue Shield may be subject to deductibles and copays. Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield will only cover Genvisc 850 for arthritic knees.

How soon will I see relief

How long do results last for?

There are many variables that determine how long the results of a Hyaluronic Acid injection will last for. Results will also vary from person to person and depend on a variety of factors including, diet, exercise, lifestyle choices, etc…

At what point should a patient explore this option, and when is it too late?

The great news is that our research shows that is never too late. Most chronic pain conditions slowly get worse over time, not better. For this reason, we encourage patients not to continue to suffer and come to receive the therapy to get them out of the suffering and pain. We have helped patients from 18 -102 years old and had the same great outcomes. Age does not seem to matter when it comes to Hyaluronic Acid therapy.
