When it comes to chronic pain, there are a lot of different ways you can work to treat or mask the pain. From medications to lifestyle changes, these treatment options can work to provide you certain levels of pain relief. Learn more about the different treatment options that are available to you if you have chronic pain.

Medications

Medications are a common treatment option for masking chronic pain. In fact, it’s not uncommon for providers to prescribe prescription medications for pain relief. These medications can include nonopioids (like aspirin or NSAIDs), opioids (like morphine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone), and adjuvant analgesics (like antidepressants). 

But it’s also important to note that some chronic pain cannot be treated with prescription medications. On top of that, many people are reluctant to depend on prescription medications to provide pain relief, making other treatment options important. 

Trigger Point Injections

Trigger points are a tender area in your muscles. To help treat chronic pain at its source, a local anesthetic is injected into trigger points in that area. Sometimes, injections can include steroids. But trigger points are great for treating conditions like chronic pelvic pain, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia. 

Topical Pain Relievers

If you have muscle or joint pain, certain creams and ointments can be applied directly to the area. Topical treatments are great when they are combined with other treatment options, including hot and cold treatments.  

Cold and Heat

If you have localized chronic pain, using hot and cold treatments can help provide that area with relief. 

Applying something cold will help reduce inflammation and should be used right after an injury or a flare-up of your chronic illness. Heat, on the other hand, works to relax your muscles and raise your pain threshold for pain that is constant and unrelenting. 

Exercise

This is usually a great way to manage most types of chronic pain. Many types of pain can come from tighter muscles, so focusing on exercises that stretch those muscles can help provide pain relief. This is a great way to treat pain caused by fibromyalgia, arthritis, and lower back pain.

There are other benefits of exercising that extend beyond pain relief, however. Incorporating exercise into your schedule can help strengthen those tight muscles, improve your quality of sleep, increase the mobility of your joints, and release endorphins into your body.

Holding stress and muscle tension in your body can exacerbate your chronic pain. That is why relaxation techniques can help provide some pain relief. Some techniques include:

  • Massage
  • Mindfulness
  • Breathing exercises
  • Progressive muscle relaxation

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, along with acupressure, is a type of traditional Chinese medicine. Both work to provide pain relief by manipulating key points of the body. This manipulation prompts the body to release endorphins — the body’s natural painkiller — that help block the pain message that the area is sending to the brain.
